Founders Story

Debarshi & Harshita
Carrying home into the world.
House of Riha began with two people, one shared heritage and a desire to carry a little piece of home into the world.
Founded by Harshita and Debarshi, House of Riha is deeply personal to us. Growing up with Assam as a part of our story, we have always been drawn to the beauty of its textiles, traditions and craftsmanship.
What began as a shared appreciation slowly became a shared dream—to reimagine Assamese heritage through a contemporary lens and introduce its quiet elegance to a wider world.
“For us, fashion is more than what we wear. It is a memory, identity and a way of carrying home with us, wherever in the world we may be.”
This venture is our way of preserving what we love, celebrating where we come from and creating something that can travel far beyond home.
House of Riha was born from a deep love for the heritage, craftsmanship and quiet beauty of Assam. Inspired by its rich textiles and traditions, we bring together the beauty of traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary and thoughtful approach to design. We celebrate the hands behind every piece, the stories woven into every thread, and the cultural details that make Assamese textiles truly special.
From Assam, with love
Woven in the Brahmaputra Valley
Every piece of House of Riha begins with Assamese craftsmanship, a heritage shaped by generations of textiles, artistry, intricate weaving, traditions and an enduring relationship with silk.
Our first collection begins with Eri silk, a textile deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Assam. Across the villages and weaving communities of the Brahmaputra Valley, the craft of Eri has been passed down through generations, connecting each piece to the people, landscapes and traditions from where it comes.
The journey begins with open Ahimsa cocoons, which are gathered without harming the moth and hand-spun into yarn on the traditional takuri spindle.
The yarn passes through skilled artisan hands, from organic botanical dyeing with onion peels and Assam tea to the heritage handloom.
Each stole takes several days of hand weaving, with the time varying according to its size, weave and design.
The natural texture and subtle irregularity of Eri are part of its beauty, a quiet reminder that every piece has been touched by human hands.
For House of Riha, this is only the beginning. We hope to continue exploring the rich world of Assamese silks and textiles, bringing different fibres, techniques and stories into a contemporary expression of luxury.
Because we believe heritage should not remain still.
What is Eri Silk?
Native exclusively to the Brahmaputra valley of Assam, Eri is an indigenous peace silk that challenges everything the Western world assumes about luxury textiles.
Born of life, non-violent and completely sustainable.
Unlike conventional silks where silkworms are boiled alive, Eri silk honors life. The silkworm completes its natural metamorphosis and flies away freely as a moth before the open cocoon is hand-spun. Our collection is sustainably grounded—from zero-electricity handloom weaving to botanical natural dyes derived from repurposed onion peels and heritage Assam tea leaves.
Quiet, textured, and deeply grounding.
Eri challenges everything the Western world assumes about silk. It possesses none of the slippery, shiny, synthetic coldness of mass-manufactured fabrics. Instead, it offers a dense, tactile matte drape that feels like raw Himalayan cashmere handwoven with wild linen—settling over your shoulders with reassuring, comforting weight.
Insulating warmth that breathes naturally.
Eri silk possesses inherent thermal-regulating and breathable qualities. Because of its microscopic fiber structure and the unhurried way it is hand-spun and woven, the fabric traps pockets of insulating air—helping an Eri stole feel comfortably warm and cozy in cooler weather. At the same time, silk is naturally moisture-managing and breathable, allowing lighter Eri fabrics to feel comfortable and never stuffy in warmer conditions.
Softens, deepens, and lives with you.
Modern fast-fashion deteriorates with every wear. Authentic hand-spun Eri silk does the exact opposite: the friction of your hands, the warmth of your skin, and the passage of time gently soften the fibers over the decades, developing a supple, glowing patina meant to be passed down through generations.
Treasured for its softness, warmth, and understated dignity.
Each piece is a quiet study in slow craft, where tactile natural texture meets modern silhouettes. Woven with patient intention on family looms, every thread carries the living heritage of Assam—its mist-covered riverbanks, ancient traditions, and generational hands.
“A piece of heritage, elevated for today. A warmth from home that stays with you.”
True luxury is never defined by excess or loud logos, but by authenticity, human touch, and stories that outlast time.
Heritage Beautifully Reimagined. Why Eri Silk is Unlike Any Other
Most commercial silks rely on high synthetic shine and fragile care. Eri was perfected in Assam to be resilient, warm, breathable, and deeply comforting to live in.
- —Boiled with silkworms inside the cocoon
- —Slippery, glossy finish; prone to water spots
- —Fragile fiber requiring delicate dry cleaning
- —Cold and unyielding against winter chill
- ◆100% Ahimsa & Sustainable: Cruelty-free; botanically dyed with onion peels & Assam tea
- ◆Tactile Matte Drape: Feels like raw cashmere and linen
- ◆Enduring Heirloom: Becomes softer and suppler over time
- ◆Thermal-Regulating & Breathable: Traps insulating air in cooler weather, yet naturally breathable without stuffiness
The Looms of Assam & The Meaning of “Riha” (ৰিহা)

The Sacred Drape of Assam
What does Riha represent?
In Assamese culture, a Riha (ৰিহা) is not merely an accessory—it is the traditional ceremonial cloth draped across the upper body by Assamese women during milestones, prayers, and sacred ceremonies. It carries the weight of dignity, modesty, and familial grace.
By naming the brand House of Riha, we pay homage to this sacred piece of cloth. We preserve its original sanctity and handloom integrity while adapting its proportion and drape for the modern London wardrobe.
Woven by independent generational weavers and women collectives located across the heritage weaving clusters of Assam.
The Unhurried 40-Day Journey
The Cocoon's Freedom
Reared on wild castor leaves across Assam. The cocoon is opened only after the silkworm naturally emerges as a moth.
Hand-Spun on Takuri
The open cocoons are hand-spun on traditional drop spindles (takuri · তাকুৰী), yielding subtle organic slubs and texture.
Unhurried Loom Weaving
Woven inch by inch on wooden throw-shuttle looms in Assam. A single piece requires between 30 to 45 days.
Finished for London
Hand-fringed, inspected for drape, and packed with an authenticity tag recording the weaver's signature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Practical insights on Assam heritage, fiber behavior, Ahimsa harvesting, and London availability.
Unlike conventional Mulberry silk, which has a glossy, slippery finish, Eri silk is hand-spun from open cocoons using traditional drop spindles (takuri · তাকুৰী). This gives it a dense, tactile matte texture similar to fine cashmere or wild linen. Furthermore, Eri silk has natural thermal-regulating and breathable qualities: its fibers and the way it is traditionally spun and woven trap pockets of insulating air, allowing an Eri stole to feel warm and cozy in cooler weather. At the same time, silk is naturally moisture-managing and breathable, so it feels comfortable and never stuffy in warmer conditions.
